New NSF grant boosts Assistive Technology research at UC Santa Cruz

A team of universities including UC Santa Cruz, Penn, U of Minnesota and U of Maine, has been awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation under the Cyber-Enabled Discovery and Innovation program, for a total amount of $1.5M. The project, titled "Cyber Enhancement of Spatial Cognition for the Visually Impaired", will develop technology for wayfinding without sight in urban environments. The goal is to design and prototype a wearable sensor platform that tracks the blind user's path and provides directions based on automated visual analysis of the scene. This work has great potential for improving the independence and quality of life of visually impaired individuals, for whom independent mobility in unfamiliar environments can be extremely challenging.  More
